Ready for Wings

Here's the second little painting I did for the Wings Over the Rockies exhibit at Pynelogs which starts next week.  It will join my Downy Woodpecker in a corner of the gallery.

This male pileated woodpecker is one of a pair that has spent many hours in the trees outside my kitchen windows.  Sometimes I have been fortunate enought to see both him and his mate at the same time.

They are fascinating birds to watch as they hop up and down the trunks listening for insects to dine on.  I marvel at how agile they are with their seemingly large clumsy bodies.

They have been competing with the pair of Northern Flickers for the suet I hung near our deck. It is certain that I could not bear to hang upside down and swing so long just for a nibble or two!
